The Key to Losing Weight the Healthy Way

From the very beginning, fitness has been at the heart of my relationship with my wife, Erin.

Before I was brave enough to ask her out on a real date, I made it a point to go buy shoes at the running store in Baltimore she managed, just to talk to her while she fit me in shoes. And after dating for just a few months, I flew out to Chicago to watch her run a marathon there — her first of three marathons, two of which we would run together.

But then we had kids, and as tends to happen, we got busy. Erin made it her priority to be the best mom she could be, and this came at the expense of exercise time. Even with our mostly whole-food vegan diet, Erin never quite lost the weight from her second pregnancy … until now.

Erin recently lost 18 pounds in six weeks, and she’s now smaller than even before we had our first child. More importantly, she’s rediscovered her passion for health and fitness, and is making plans to run a half marathon (her first in over 5 years).

So what inspired the change? What did she have to change from our already-healthy diet to actually lose the weight? That’s the topic of today’s episode of NMA Radio — hope you enjoy it!

  1. Excellent interview! As I stated in my lecture, I didn’t invent calorie density, but I think I simplified it and made it delicious, easy and sustainable. But kudos to Erin for doing the work and putting it into practice! Even though she wasn’t really overweight, it just shows how easily we can get sucked into the Pleasure Trap when we are Not paying attention or eating too ,any calorically dense foods like oil or nuts. Congratulations on your 18 pound weight loss. I will be speaks to the cruise next year and look forward to seeing you rock that bikini!

I have truly enjoyed the other episodes, but this one by far has had the biggest impact for me. Maybe Erin could do a podcast once a month. It’s nice to hear from a classy lady once in a while! 🙂

  3. This may be a dumb question, but how do you roast veggies without oil? I usually roast them with a little olive oil–but do they burn when you don’t use any sort of liquid?

  8. Two questions: when you go on the cruise next time, will you order oil free? And, I work out at 5:30am twice a week with a trainer at a gym. We do core work, lift weights, sit ups etc and I find I must eat beforehand or I get weak. I have been having a piece of Ezekiel toast with almond butter on it and this works fine. But I also want to lose about 10 pounds and am not sure if this is too high calorie and should try something different. Any suggestions? Thanks.

    • Hi, I’m a trainer and often advise my clients to eat something like that before a hard workout. Just make sure that later in the day you are making healthy choices and I doubt that this small meal alone would interfere with the weight. Yes, it is calorie dense, but maybe you could cut back on the amount of nut butter, or mash a half banana onto the toast instead. Much less fat.

I really, really appreciate how generously you shared, Erin, about your experience, and how much insight both you and Matt shared into your lifestyle these days so that we can really see a practical implementation of this. The arguments for the pleasure trap and the calorie density approach have been very compelling to me, yet the practical aspects of avoiding oil on a long-term basis and eating lower on the calorie density spectrum can feel very daunting. Dining out on an oil-free diet — strategies to craft your own off-menu dish, most effective ways you have found to ask for what you want, etc — that would be a popular topic with me, and I’m sure many listeners would have contributions and ideas, too. HUGE appreciation for Chef AJ – her approach is really effective, and I’m really learning from her. I can’t wait to listen to the interview you did with her now, but I wanted to be sure to thank you Erin and Matt for being so honest and generous with us — you can already see with the response you’re getting from this episode that it’s making a big difference!!

Is there a way to get a more detailed outline of what I should be doing without spending a ton? What’s the name of the book that outlines the philosophy of eating this way, if there is one?
